Kasi Vinayaga mess - Legendary veg restaurant in Triplicane

One of the iconic veg restaurants in Chennai is Kasi Vinayaga mess located in Akbar Sahib street,Triplicane.

I wanted to try eating in this mess for several years but only recently got an opportunity to try and wanted to share amongst you all.

The mess has already crossed golden jubilee and they offer veg only pandhi(sitting in rows) lunch. There is a separate table and chair for everyone!

As soon as you enter, you will need to get token. For 100rs lunch you get rice,sambhar,rasam,2 types of curries, vathakozhambu, pappad, pickle, buttlemilk and payasam. You will need to pay extra 10rs if you want seasoned dal+ghee and extra 10rs for thick curd.If you go for extras then it comes around 120rs per person. They also have takeaways at rs.120.Ghee plus seasoned dal is famous in this mess.

The table is already placed with a banana leaf and a tumbler with water. The token already has seat number and so there is no fuss. You see the token and sit in your allotted seats.

The helpers there serves food with utmost patience and it needs a special mention .Rice comes in a nice mountain shape.I understand that if we cannot eat that much rice, and if we notify the helpers, they would reduce as well.I felt this is a highlight of this mess, which tries to prevent wastage.

The menu that we ate had rice, sambhar, vathakozhambu, pineapple rasam, potato curry, kootu, semiya sago payasam/kheer,buttermilk and lemon pickle. What I loved the most amongst the menu were pine apple rasam, just the way I wanted ,a bit of tanginess ,sweetness etc.Lemon pickle tasted too divine with thick curd rice.

On the whole it was a nice experience and would rate 5/5 . Parking in the congested street is a problem but it is worth a visit and would highly recommend it. And boy,the pappad was not oily at all even one bit.

PS: We went for lunch but they offer dinner service as well. This mess replicates a home style atmosphere which has a seating capacity of 30 to 35 at a time.

A picture to document the visit.
